Owning a car comes with responsibilities, and essential auto care is at the top of that list. Regular maintenance not only keeps your vehicle running smoothly but also extends its lifespan and ensures your safety on the road. From checking fluids to monitoring tire pressure, basic car maintenance is crucial for every car owner to understand and practice.

This article delves into must-know car care tips that form the foundation of preventive maintenance. We'll explore the importance of regular fluid checks, proper tire care, and essential engine components that require attention. By following this basic car maintenance checklist, drivers can avoid costly repairs, improve fuel efficiency, and enjoy a more reliable driving experience. Whether you're a new car owner or a seasoned driver, these tips will help you keep your vehicle in top shape.

    REGULAR FLUID CHECKS AND MAINTENANCE

Regular fluid checks and maintenance are crucial for keeping a vehicle running smoothly and preventing costly repairs. Car owners should pay close attention to four essential fluids: engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid.

    Engine Oil

Engine oil is the lifeblood of any vehicle. It's recommended to check the oil level at least once a month or before long trips [1].

    To check the oil:

    - Park the car on a level surface and turn off the engine.

    - Wait at least five minutes for the oil to settle.

    - Locate and remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and remove it again.

    - Check the oil level against the markings on the dipstick.

    - Inspect the oil color – it should be clear amber, caramel, or tan.

If the oil level is low or the color has turned dark brown or black, it's time for an oil change. Modern cars with oil-life monitoring systems typically need oil changes every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.

    Coolant

Engine coolant, also known as antifreeze, is crucial for regulating engine temperature and preventing corrosion.

    To check the coolant:

    - Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes after driving.

    - Locate the coolant reservoir, a semi-translucent white tank.

    - Check if the coolant level is between the "Min" and "Max" lines.

If the level is low, add the appropriate coolant mixture, typically a 50/50 blend of antifreeze and distilled water. Be cautious when opening the reservoir cap, as the coolant may be under pressure.

    Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is essential for the proper functioning of the hydraulic braking system.
